The subject we cover today deals with lifting accidents and manual handling injuries. The Manual Handling Operations Regulations 1992, as amended in 2002 apply to a wide range of manual handling activities which can include lifting pulling pushing or pressing. The type of load that a person may be lifting very much varies from job to job. In the course of your employment you may have to lift inanimate objects such as boxes or produce but in other occupations the load could be a person or an animal. It is said that up to one third of all injuries in the workplace occur because of lifting heavy or awkward objects. Many people injure themselves due to a lack of training or awareness of the danger that presents itself when you lift or move a heavy object. However it is the responsibility of the employer to ensure that the employee is fully trained and made aware of the risks of handling objects in the workplace. Your employer must: Avoid the need for hazardous manual handling, so far as is reasonably practicable; Assess the risk of injury from any hazardous manual handling that can’t be avoided; and Reduce the risk of injury from hazardous manual handling, so far as is reasonably practicable In general terms a man should not lift above 25kg’s in weight and a woman 16kgs.
